District Security Committee host a round-table discussion on Galamsey

On Wednesday, 5th April, 2023, the Dormaa East District Security Committee hosted a round-table discussion centered on the theme, “Diagnosing the benefits and problem in ASGM practices to apply appropriate solutions: Reversing the Galamsey Menace in Ghana”.
The event commenced with a presentation from Prof. Emmanuel Arhin, Dean-in-charge, Dormaa campus and Dean of school of Geoscience at the University of Energy and Natural Resources,
He focused on the benefits and legalization of Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM). He mentioned that ASM provides employment- since 40% of local gold produce comes from small scale and illigal mining/(galamsey) groups.
“In monetary terms Ghana receives $1.3 billion from this sector in 2020, therefore efforts to eliminate galamsey must be carried out in manner that does not affect proceeds from the sector”. he said.
Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Agyeman, Dormaa East DCE also acknowledged the menace and stated his bad experience at various galamsey sites that it is not as a result of ASM but rather, as a result of the irresponsibility of their operations.
